"Rape of Rhea"
'Rape of Rhea'
The mural was created by Anthony Pennock, from Nienburgs twintown Las Cruces in New Mexico and has been painted by him and citicens of the town.
Theme of the mural is 'Water and life'. Water is a connection between Nienburg and Las Cruces. The cities both are lying at a river, Nienburg at the Weser, Las Cruces at the Rio Grande. Nienburg and Las Cruces symbolise in this connection on the one hand the countries with water in abundance and on the other countries, where water is a very scarce resource. The mural in Nienburg is called ‘Rape of Rhea’. The person sitting on the left side in devastated landscape below a dead tree could be at the end of a time he did not know to utilise. The abuse of the environment (in the middle of the painting symbolised by factories, tanks and tubes and the threatening ‘monster’ of decline) has lead to the environmental death. On the other side, the tree and person can symbolise the departure for a world wide improvement: a world worth living in it with an intact environment, symbolised by Pennock with the women in the water. Nature with living inside. The godmother of the picture is Rhea, a goddess of the rivers in the religious tradition of indigenous people in New Mexico.
